Claude Monet
Biography
Claude Monet was an Impressionist painter. He painted much differently than all of the famous painters of his time. He had new,
fresh ideas about what art should be. Claude Monet was born in Paris, France in 1840! When he was little his family moved to LeHavre, a town near
the sea. His father owned a stove that sold supplies to sailors. Monet didn't like school. He didn't like to listen to his teacher. He did like to
draw funny pictures. Claude Monet drew funny caricatures of people and sold them for money when he was a teenager. Claude went to Paris to learn to
paint. But Claude Monet didn't like to paint like the famous artists in Paris. He liked to paint ordinary things. He liked to paint outdoors. He
used light, bright colors. He used short, fast brush strokes. Monet loved to paint water scenes. He wanted to show reflections and how light made
things look at different times of the day. He even built a special boat that he could paint on. He floated in the water and painted what he saw.
Sometimes he painted the same things at different times of the day or year to show how things like in different lights. His Haystack paintings are
like this.
Claude Monet's favorite model was Camille. Four the "Women in the Garden," he used Camille as the model for all four women. They got married and
had children. Their first son's name was Jean.
When he was older, his family moved to Giverny. They bought a nice house with beautiful gardens. He made a water garden with a lily pond and a
Japanese garden for the last year's his life. Monet painted many pictures of his lily pond. Claude Monet died when he was 86 years old, but he has
left behind a part of himself -- his beautiful pictures.
