Albert Anker's evocative still life Two Glass of Red Wine, a Bottle of Wine; a Corkscrew and a Plate of Biscuits on a Tray shimmers with vitality and youth, and is characteristic of Anker's late-nineteenth century work that, although Academic in approach, bordered on Impressionism in style.
Anker demonstrated his artistic talents early as a draftsman and soon fine-tuned his talent as a painter during his training at the prestigious École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts between 1855–60, studying under the great Charles Gleyre. Specializing in figure drawing, Anker's range of works on paper vary from rapid sketches, which served as variants and designs as samples for clients, through to detailed elaborate leaves which are considered as works in their own right. The number of works on paper made during the artist's life are not known, but it can be assumed that it comprises at least several thousand. The style of his visual language ranges from delicately executed pencil drawing to watercolor, oil painting and still life.
During his time in Paris the artist developed a practice that revolved around the articulation of historical and biblical themes. Returning to his native Switzerland he developed what would become his hallmark style; reproductions of scenes of rural life in the Realist style. Capturing his fellow townspeople in a stark and sympathetic manner, Anker managed to capture the vibrancy of rural life without idealizing it. Two Glass of Red Wine, a Bottle of Wine; a Corkscrew and a Plate of Biscuits on a Tray is a remarkable and unique work in his oeuvre. With the balance and manner of a Daumier, Courbet or Millet painting, Anker stages a fragmentary take on the ingredients of everyday life, glorifying objects and elements that would usually pass unnoticed.
