A Quiet Lake is one of the paintings of the landscape artist Albert Bierstadt. The date in which this particular canvas was created is unknown. It depicts the banks of a lake during the daytime. It is a peaceful scene.
In the foreground, we can see five trees gathered on the left side of the canvas. Each seems to be of a different species, for the trunks are all painted with a specific texture and a particular shade of brown. With the leaves, the same happens. The tree that is closer to the river, in the center of the canvas, has yellowish leaves, whereas the others have still green leaves. In the bottom right corner of the painting, Bierstadt painted one tree, that shows shades of both green and yellow.
In the background, there is a significant number of trees lined together. The treetops vary from shades of green to brownish orange. We can’t distinguish where one tree ends and where the next one starts. In the center of the composition, taking more of the right side is the lake. In the distance, we can see something that could be a forest or a hill. The color used by the artist for this far away element has tones of blue. This technique, called aerial perspective, makes the scenery appear more authentic.
This painting contains the main elements of Bierstadt's artistic production: a beautiful natural scenery, made in a realistic style. He, along with other artists such as Thomas Hill, James McDougal Hart, and Robert Walter Weir was part of the Hudson River School. They gathered at the Hudson River to make sketches of nature and use them as models for larger works.
During his life, Bierstadt got a lot of success for his works, gaining enough money to allow him to travel to beautiful sceneries, which he used as subjects for his paintings. Even though he moved to the United States as a baby, Bierstadt was born in Germany. The artist studied painting there from around the age of 23 to 27. His paintings of the European landscapes, however, are not only from this period of studies, for he came back frequently afterward.
A great part of his fame, which came along with selling his paintings for high amounts of money, came from the American West paintings he did. As the country was still discovering the Western side, Bierstadt became one of the primary sources of visual information about this paradisiac land, which was a great interest of the American citizens.
