Painted in 1856, Staubbach Falls near Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland is a lovely oil work by the German American artist Albert Bierstadt. He did this beautiful landscape painting during his studies in Europe, where he was from 1853 to 1857.
This canvas has a centralized composition, for an essential element, the white Lauterbrunnen Wall – a mountain from the Swiss Alps – is placed in the center of the canvas. The white color of the snowy mountains gives a pleasant contrast to the cliff of the Staubbach Falls, on the right and to the trees on the left side, in the foreground.
Both these two elements, rendered in a color palette of dark browns and greens, create a frame to the Alps and the small piece of land that we can see directly in front of it. The grass there is green, and the sunlight can be noticed by its reflection on the leaves of the trees and field.
On the right side of the canvas, there’s a river that comes from the direction of the Lauterbrunnen mountains. This draws attention towards the center of the painting. The pine trees in the bottom part of the canvas also direct the viewers to the same spot as the river does.
The Waterfall’s color connects the right side of the canvas to the snowy Alps, as well as makes relation to the upper left corner of the painting, where we can find clouds that go over the Lauterbrunnen peaks.
The way Bierstadt chose to paint this landscape, gives an Eden garden feeling to it. There is no human presence in the scenery, and it contains many different elements of mesmerizing natural beauty: snowy mountains, a waterfall, forests, a river, clean blue sky and fields of green grass.
It is incredible to think that Bierstadt managed to paint even more astonishing landscapes after he returned to the United States of America. Always using this realistic technique, he developed a passion for the Western American sceneries, as well as for sunsets. He believed the sunlight by the end of the day was capable of bringing the most of romanticism out of the scene.
Bierstadt’s works show a great deal of the American beauty. Some examples are the Half Dome, and Sunset in the Rockies both painted in 1886.
