The painting Sunrise on the Matterhorn by Albert Bierstadt, painted in 1975, one year before the artist moved to Nassau, shows a Swiss landscape in the Alps. The colors in most of the painting are a very delicate pastel, giving the perfect impression of a sunrise.
Bierstadt is most famous for his paintings of sceneries of the United States of America. He was part of the Hudson River School of art, which was an informal group of artists, who had a similar conception of aesthetic and subjects. They got this name, because of the first sketch meetings they had on the banks of the Hudson River. They all did studies for more prominent artworks, that would be finished in the studios. That’s the main difference between the art of the Hudson River artists, who had Romantic influences, and the Impressionists.
In the Impressionism, there was also significant interest in natural scenes. The difference was that the brushstrokes were always very loose and visible, whereas in the Romantic paintings the brushstrokes were erased from the canvas. The idea was to try to imitate reality but giving it a magnificent light, if we consider that the Impressionists primary interest was to represent the sunlight in the most faithful way possible, frequently disregarding the shapes.
Throughout his life, Bierstadt enriched by selling his renderings of American landscapes. This allowed him to travel back to Europe several times. In the Sunrise on the Matterhorn, we see a product of one of these journeys. But even though this is a painting with great technical value, it lacks the historical importance, which many of Bierstadt’s work have.
By painting the new lands of the American West, this artist enriched the concept the Americans had of their own country. His works gained a nationalist role, as his magnificent renderings of the country’s landscapes helped increase the immigration to the West.
