This work, entitled The Falls of St. Anthony, made in 1887 by the German American artist Albert Bierstadt, shows a majestic sunset at the waterfalls of the Upper Mississippi River. This is an excellent example of the light treatment Bierstadt gave to his landscapes, with which he transformed the American sceneries into paradisiac places.
This light covers all elements, except the foreground. The small islands that we can see in the middle of the river, closer to the center of the painting, where the actual waterfalls are, were painted with a brownish orange, which intensifies the sunset atmosphere and the power its light has.
Here, the composition is almost entirely taken by the river and the falls. Only on the left side of the canvas, in the foreground, there is land with trees in a different shade of color. These are in front of the setting sun. As they are against the light, their color is of dark shades of brown. This dark color palette balances the clear one from the bright side of the canvas, on the right.
Next to the trees, also painted with the dark color palette, are three people. A man is standing on a concrete structure, apparently looking at the sunset. The other two are facing the opposite direction, a little apart from the man, talking.
The color of the water varies from a blue, almost green, to orange in the area closer to the sunset. The Mississippi River reflects the sky, which is also orange and has a few clouds on the upper side of the canvas. Bierstadt managed to give the perfect impression of flowing water by adding white to it in several points.
The artist’s works were considered nationalists, for the way he rendered the landscapes of the United States of America was of such an enormous beauty, that it would instigate pride, just for the fact of being citizens of this incredibly paradisiac land.
In 1853, Bierstadt moved to Dusseldorf, in Germany, where he refined his painting techniques, returning to America in 1857. His style is considered Romantic but is also included in the Luminist movement. This is a style that happened in the United States, which encompasses artists with extremely realistic techniques, but whose works are mainly of American landscapes. Martin Johnson Heade and Fitz Hugh Lane were also artists that worked with this art style.
