The Coronation of the Serbian Tsar Stepan Dusan as East Roman Emperor is a beautiful 405 x 480 cm egg tempera on canvas by Alphonse Mucha, which was painted on a monumental canvas and belongs to The Slav Epic cycle series. Mucha started this series in 1910, only finishing it 18 years later. The Slav Epic consists of 20 oil paintings done on massive canvases. After finishing it, Mucha gave the 20 paintings to Prague, under the condition that they built a special pavilion for the exhibition of the works. Still, only nowadays, Mucha’s desire is being fulfilled.
This monumental and perfectly executed canvas praises the figure of Tsar Štěpán Dušan, a powerful monarch of his era and who played a significant part in expanding the Slavic territory. In addition, he conquered the region of the Greeks, and this painting shows the commemoration of that event, as he crowns himself as the King of the Serbs and the Greeks. He was a conqueror, but he also established a moral code that became an essential document of medieval literature.
The picture has a dynamic composition and a soft, almost pastel palette. A long procession comes from the furthest regions of the painting, right on the horizon line where haze covers buildings and sky. The line forms a curve in the shape of an S. At the picture’s middle is Dusan, accompanied by two men on each side and wearing detailed white clothes. They hold red fabrics around him, and some young women throw flower petals in the air. The scene has many characters and is painted with impressive skill.
Mucha was mainly known for his graphic work, which perfectly embodied the hopeful and Bohemian air of the Parisian Belle Époque. Mucha got famous when he started working with Sarah Bernhardt, a famous actress that propelled his name to a good network of patrons. After that, Mucha became immensely praised for working with decorative arts, illustration, lithographs, theater designs, and sketches. The Coronation of the Serbian Tsar Stepan Dusan as East Roman Emperor is an excellent example of a less known phase of his work, but nonetheless an incredible one.
