Amedeo Modigliani’s 1919 painting Landscape in Southern France is a rare addition to the artist’s highly idiosyncratic body of work. Finished just a year before his death from Tuberculosis, this reproduction from life of a view in the South of France is one of only four landscapes the artist ever painted. Most known for his portrait studies of the lives, loves, and artists that populated his personal life, Modigliani took a trip to paint views of the Cote d’Azur, possibility in the hope of restoring his health. During his visit the poverty-stricken and consumptive avant-garde master visited the populist aging Impressionist Renoir, who had a magnificent estate in the area Modigliani was visiting. Renoir’s neighbour later reported that after the aging master doled out advice on how to render more realistic reproductions, the artists forceful disagreements descended into a fight. In Landscape in Southern France there is embodied both the evidence of a lineage from Expressionism and a distinct break with the Impressionist studies of felt reality.
Modigliani, an Italian artist who moved to Paris in 1906 to chase the avant-garde dream, rejected his academic training and descended into a life of bohemianism. Initially painting nudes, the artist quickly rejected the tactics he had learned; believing that the only way to achieve a new kind of creativity was to forcefully disentangle oneself from social norms. Falling deeply in love with his own images of dark beauty. Modigliani was deeply influenced by the world of early-twentieth century Paris, acquainting himself with all the leading names on the scene. Drinking heavily and engaging in numerous affairs, the young artist was soon the scandal of a city that was immensely hard to scandalise. Destroying and rejecting any last vestiges of his bourgeois life, Modigliani’s possible fight with Renoir is a glorious reflection of his art.
