FRAMING INFORMATION
1st Art Gallery offers the option to receive your painting ready to hang or rolled in a tube.
Currently, for safety, we're able to ship framed paintings only up to a certain size. Once the maximum size is reached, the framing option is automatically disabled.
However, if you are interested in stretching or framing a painting larger than 24x36 inches (60x90 cm), please contact one of our customer success associates or let us know in your order notes. We will send you a catalog of our large framing styles and pricing options.
Unframed rolled canvas orders will arrive rolled inside a protective tube with an extra 1.5" white canvas on all sides so you can easily frame it locally.
It is not rare for artists to have a preferred subject matter, be it a particular landscape, a beloved personal object, a theme from their environment, or a favorite model. Not many artists have a relationship as intimate with their favorite subject matter as the bohemian Amedeo Modigliani had with his partner Jeanne Hebuterne, who he met when she was only nineteen years old on the introduction of Russian sculptor Chana Orloff. Still, although Modigliani was wont to paint nudes, he only ever painted his life partner fully clothed, since she was, for all intents and purposes, his wife and the mother of his child.
This oil on canvas created a mere year after meeting the love of his life, in 1918, is only one among many portrayals of the object of his affections, each representation unique in its own way, and possessing a different approach on aesthetics, technique, and composition. Being for a long time in the hands of private collectors, the piece fits nicely into the artist’s overall Modernist style, bearing many of the Italian’s staple characteristics, such as the elongated face and neck, the solid fields of color and the energetic, chaotic, brushwork. Modigliani’s portraits of Jeanne Hebuterne can be understood almost as a test site for his style, and this specific work stands out for two of its characteristics: the color palette and the eyes of his model.
With regards to color, here Modigliani chose a subdued and restricted palette of earth tones, going from a light brown shade used for the skin tone and hat brim, a little bit brighter for the former, to the closed black that can be found in her hat’s top, clothes, and couch, the latter two almost melding into each other in a way that makes it difficult for the observer to understand where one ends, and the other begins. The palette is extended to the rather simple background, with some red tint added to it, so that the figure of Jeanne pops from the painting even though the colors used are quite similar to each other.
Another distinctive feature of the painting is her eyes, which are portrayed here empty like they have been cut from the canvas, while Modigliani would usually represent the eyes of his models as very lifelike and communicative.
