Recumbent act with arms crossed behind the head

While the Italian Jewish painter Amedeo Modigliani is most often known as an accomplished portrait artist, some of his most ingenious and exciting work was the nudes that he produced in 1917. Previously only a mostly unknown portrait artist, in that year Modigliani had for the first time a solo exhibition in Paris, arranged by his close friend and most significant art dealer, the Polish poet Léopold Zborowski. For that exhibit, Modigliani produced over a dozen nudes, of which seven were exhibited in the Paris show, which became famous not only for its relevance within the art world but more due to the issues surrounding its reception by Parisian society and the many accusations of obscenity faced by the artist.

Much of the shock caused by the exhibit was due not to the nudity portrayed therein, but by how it was framed. For his exhibition, Modigliani took much inspiration from the Renaissance paintings in the choice of subject matter, but he averted the usual tropes of the genre fundamentally. While in the Renaissance the paintings of nudes were most often couched in a mythological or allegorical setting, sometimes even historical, Modigliani presents the nude female body for what it is, devoid of context or allegory, which emphasizes the eroticism of the painting.

This means that the women in the paintings were not Venus, Helen of Troy or even an odalisk from a distant land, situations in which the modern man could rationalize the nudity, thus enabling them to gaze upon the female form from behind a wall of propriety, but instead just Parisian women who had been paid to pose for the artist. That proximity to the observer’s reality meant that there was no rational middle ground to protect their integrity, and that meant that, for the society of the time, there was not much separating the paintings from pure pornography, which certainly added to the artist’s allure.

Now in possession of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in New York, the oil on canvas helped redefine the nude genre, removing the veil of propriety that covered it and forcing the public to confront the human body for what it is. One exciting aspect of Modigliani’s nudes is that different from his portraits, he only painted nudes of hired models, while with the portraits Modigliani always preferred to paint his acquaintances, especially those closest to him.

Purchasing a frame

You may choose to purchase your painting framed, in which case, it will arrive "ready to hang". We offer more than 20 beautiful models, all hand finished and expertly assembled by our experienced framers.

Note that for safety reasons we can only frame up to a certain size. Once the maximum size is reached the framing option is automatically disabled.

Purchasing a Stretching Service

If you are planning to frame your painting yourself, use an existing frame, or frame it locally, you may choose to order your painting with a stretching service, meaning that it will arrive mounted on wooden bars.

Purchasing a Gallery Wrap

If you're considering not framing your painting at all, you may opt for a Gallery Wrap. The term Gallery Wrap refers to the way the canvas is stretched, which is by wrapping it around thick stretcher bars, about 1.5 inch thick, with the canvas being secured to the back rather than the sides of those bars.

Door to door fully insured courier delivery

All orders ship with UPS, FedEx or DHL and will arrive directly to your home or office. A tracking number will be emailed to you as soon as the order leaves our studio so you can track it online. All orders ship express and usually arrive within 4-5 days from the shipping date. Due to shipping restraints, many of our framed, stretched, and oversize paintings may take 6-21 days for arrival depending on the safest route determined by the postal service.
