FRAMING INFORMATION
1st Art Gallery offers the option to receive your painting ready to hang or rolled in a tube.
Currently, for safety, we're able to ship framed paintings only up to a certain size. Once the maximum size is reached, the framing option is automatically disabled.
However, if you are interested in stretching or framing a painting larger than 24x36 inches (60x90 cm), please contact one of our customer success associates or let us know in your order notes. We will send you a catalog of our large framing styles and pricing options.
Unframed rolled canvas orders will arrive rolled inside a protective tube with an extra 1.5" white canvas on all sides so you can easily frame it locally.

It is not clear what exactly fuels brilliance. We could say that, while the exact substance of that creative impulse that creates masterworks would be a rather personal matter, varying from artist to artist, from time to time, from place to place, a common thread could be found among the great artists that would engrave their names on History. That common thread, more often than not, is the need for subversion, to stare down the status quo, the artist’s context and to dare, so to speak, to swim against the current. Unfortunately for many an artist, and the Italian Expressionist Amedeo Modigliani is undoubtedly included in that list, being subversive often comes with dire consequences for the person of the artist.
Even so, it is not rare for a great artist to be discovered years after their demise, and valued by the art market far beyond anything the artist could have ever imagined. This beautiful oil on canvas is an excellent example of that process. Painted in 1917, at the height of the First World War, the painting was sold in an auction at Christie’s New York in 2015 to a Chinese businessman for the stellar sum of over 170 million dollars, placing it among the most expensive paintings ever auctioned, even though it was produced during a time of the artist’s life when he would often exchange pictures for meals or small services.
It was created as part of a series of nudes, painted to integrate the artist’s first solo exhibit at the Gallerie Berthe Well, under the patronage of the Polish art dealer Léopold Zborowski. While the show itself was not what one would call a financial success, it is said to have given new life to the nude as a serious subject matter for modernist art.
Beyond the apparent transgression of customs and morals represented not only by the nude body but by the naked body in a situation of pleasure and relaxation, the choice of the human body as a focus of joy and life is, in itself, a transgression on a broader way against the artist’s times. In the midst of the deadliest war to occur until that point in History, Modigliani chooses to portray pleasure and life, playing on the eternal duality of Eros and Thanatos that permeates the human psyche.
