A Female Nude is a breathtaking work by the Swedish painter Anders Zorn. The work’s medium is a watercolor on paper. Zorn was a praised artist from 19th-century Sweden. Born in a humble rural family, through his later professional work as a watercolorist in London, Zorn was capable of gaining international acclaim and becoming wealthy from his art. Zorn’s watercolors were fundamental for his breakthrough and in finding clientele, and he was much appreciated in a realistic and masterful manner, dealing with lighting in an impactful way. A Female Nude’s date of creation is unknown, but during his later years, the painter made a good amount of female nudes, so the work can be estimated as being from circa 1904-1916.
Zorn had humble beginnings. He entered the Academy when he was only 15. Despite his later fame, the young artist performed poorly there. After graduating, he relocated to London. In the big city, Zorn’s work found a pretty good clientele, and after he married his wife Emma, who had a middle-class background, Zorn won yet another link to the wealthy bourgeoisie. Soon enough, when he began working with oil painting at the end of the 1880s, the artist had a significant breakthrough, and commissions wouldn’t end until he passed away.
A Female Nude was done in what seems in an A4 watercolor paper. The format that Zorn chose emphasizes the height, which is typical for portraits. Zorn worked with a restricted palette throughout most of his life to maximize his use of colors and master their mixture. In this watercolor, this becomes evident as Zorn used his usual red, black and yellow. In combination with watercolors, Zorn usually used white gouache to make the most bright spots. In this specific picture, he seems only to have left the paper’s white background to act as the lighting.
The nude woman occupies the composition’s center. One of her arms is between her legs, reaching out to something that the audience can’t make out what it is. Her hand isn’t painted, becoming pure color. On her other hand, she is holding black sheets, suggesting that she is probably on her bed or getting the sheets out of the floor. With a few strokes, Zorn rendered her anatomy perfectly. The flesh folds and the bone’s structure are flawless. The woman is a redhead and has her head looking down. The way Zorn placed the shadow on her face gives the image a mysterious flair.
