I Werners Eka (In Werner's Rowing Boat) is an incredible oil painting by Swedish artist Anders Zorn. Zorn was hailed during his time for his skill handling oil paint, fidelity to anatomy, and his impactful handling of light. He was able to conciliate a kind of atmospheric manner, in which the lines of objects and bodies are usually smooth, to a truthful synthesis of human anatomy, displaying great observation to detail and general structure, but also painting in a way that seems "effortless." I Werners Eka (In Werner's Rowing Boat) is one of Zorn's later paintings, and it shows both his skill in depicting landscape and the human figure.
I Werners Eka (In Werner's Rowing Boat) was painted in 1917, three years away from when Zorn passed. By this time, Zorn and his wife lived in a small village in which he was born, named Mora. Even though Zorn became internationally famous, he eventually settled in his birthplace and had an excellent relationship with the other inhabitants. By this time, Zorn liked to work with models en plein air, even painted in his studio. I Werners Eka (In Werner's Rowing Boat) is probably a mixture of both, maybe counting with a few studies on the outside and finishing the actual canvas on his studio.
I Werners Eka (In Werner's Rowing Boat) is a rectangular-shaped canvas, emphasizing its height. The picture is of a naked woman who is precisely at the composition's center. Beneath her is a white cloth, probably sheets that she was using before uncovering. It is known that Zorn worked with models, so the woman in the image was perhaps a local who posed for the painter. The figure's anatomy is rendered with much precision, and Zorn shows how truthfully he can portray human flesh and structure.
The audience's viewpoint is inside the boat as if the viewer is sitting in front of the woman. The boat was painted with some cold and grey browns, contrasting to the pink and reddish arms of her body. Both the rock formation and the river were painted with similar treatment, with the water having a beautiful purplish tint. On the upper-right, Zorn painted some woods at a distance, giving more depth to the image. The rocks were painted with light brown and a cold dark brown and rendered with a broad brush.
