Nude by the Shore is a stunning oil on canvas by Anders Zorn, one of the most celebrated artists of his time. Born in Sweden and graduated from the country’s Royal Academy, Zorn became an international name. He was especially famous for his Realistic manner, observation skills, and capacity to make almost live portraits out of his subjects. While he is usually associated with the Impressionists, Zorn’s work is much more subtle and color restricted, generally working with only four pigments and building all of his colors from them. Nude by the Shore is one of the painter’s late works and is part of an informal series of nudes painted in natural settings.
Nude by the Shore was painted on a rectangular canvas with a portrait genre orientation. The work was done in 1914 and, by this time, Zorn was part of the small and lively community of Mora again. He decided to retreat to his hometown, and even though he had many commercial relationships abroad, he got along well with the other inhabitants of the community. He gave many drawing lessons to teenagers and children, had a big studio, and frequently worked en plein air.
This painting shows a naked woman against a landscape, a recurring subject in Zorn’s production during the 1910s. The artist was known for his deep anatomy knowledge, and it seems that during this decade, he wanted to work closely with the human body as a fundamental aspect. The woman is a brunette with white skin and is looking down to the ground. Her legs are mildly open, and her feet a short distance from each other. Her arms are a bit raised as if she was portrayed while making a slight movement, and her hand seems to be starting to clench.
On the picture’s bottom, some light green leaves cover her feet. There is also a yellow-like area to the right corner, which is more intense than the areas around it. The ground was painted fluidly with a light pinkish brown. There is some cold green grass behind her. The shore was painted with a dense white and can be seen on the upper left corner. The visual treatment of both the soil and the water are similar, giving them a strong unity. With this kind of picture, it is possible that Zorn was trying to link what seems to be the beauty in the human body and nature since these two aspects have a strong interplay in his late paintings.
