Valser is a stunning oil on canvas by the Swedish painter Anders Zorn. The original artwork belongs to the Biltmore Estate in the US. Zorn was one of the most affluent artists of his time, being hailed from the Swedish King to US Presidents, with three of them having their portraits done by Zorn. The painter had an unmistakable style, and even though he was frequently compared to the Impressionists, Zorn had a very distinctive approach to painting. Even though his works are gestural, he sought an almost mathematical logic to solve his lighting, and his works were way less chromatic than the Impressionists'.
Zorn was well known for his genre scenes and portraits. In Valser, a rectangular canvas displays his skill in a very appropriate setting. Through his light control, in his Rembrandt-influenced way, Zorn presents the viewer a relatively banal scene under dramatic lighting. There is a couple dancing a bit to the left, close to the picture's forefront. The woman wears a beautiful long white dress and has her back turned to the audience, while her companion's features are visible under dim light.
The couple is certainly participating in a party or formal festivity of sorts. At the bottom of the composition, along with the cool grey dress that is moving, Sorolla quickly painted the lighting reflected on the wood floor. A warm light is coming from a lamp to the couple's right, while the more white and neutral lighting is coming from a bigger salon that can be seen in the back, on the left side of the picture. Zorn's painterly marks can be seen on the floor, pointing to many directions as a way to capture the wood texture.
The upper right portion of the canvas is very dark, and this strong contrast on the picture is only proof of how well Zorn could work with the different tones and grading to depict lighting accurately. The lamp emits a bright reddish-orange light, which bathes the floor. There are figures on each side of the lamp: on the left, a lonely man looks to the side, while on the right, another couple is seen having a conversation.
There is a heavy curtain close to the man on the left that creates a clear division between environments. The couple's position in the painting is pivotal to reinforce its sense of depth. They are right in front of the curtain's division and are affected by both lighting sources. Beyond the curtain, the viewer sees a packed environment with many people dancing and partying.
