People by a Blue Lake, also known as Leute am Blauen See, is a captivating 60 cm × 48,5 cm (24 in × 191 in) oil on canvas by the German painter August Macke. The original artwork was painted in 1913 and now belongs to the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe. August Macke was one of the leading painters of the Der Blaue Reiter, a German publication and circle of painters that were grouped around Kandinsky and his aesthetic research towards abstraction. August Macke’s work makes one of the most exciting juxtapositions of abstract forms and figuration, changing from decade to decade.
People by a Blue Lake was done after a radical turn in Macke’s work: he met Robert Delaunay in Paris and absorbed his formal proposals, labeled “Chromatic Cubism.” As a result, the colorful landscapes of Macke become geometric and radical shapes that play between figuration and abstraction in one of the most vertiginous ways found in German Expressionism. While committed to formal experimentation, Macke disagreed with Kandinsky’s disposal of figures and developed a singular way to deal with the tensions of abstraction and figuration.
While strongly geometrized, the audience can perceive three figures in the composition. From left to right: a small red-haired girl with a white dress, a brown-haired woman with blue attire, and a man walking in a brown and purple suit. These figures are presented as geometric shapes, round and rectangle forms. From their disposition in the painting and by being in a group, they could be understood as family. The subjects are more or less centralized in the composition.
The background is similar to one of August Macke’s best friends, Franz Marc. Marc was also influenced by Delaunay and was exploring the edge of representation. While focusing on animals, August Macke and Franz Marc’s artworks can be understood as complementary parts of the same radical project. Macke’s gestural brushwork is visible through the picture’s surface, but its logic is similar to Marc’s, composed with almost the same logic as color-field painting. The color areas are, in many cases, pure and primary colors, shining with intensity. People by a Blue Lake is an incredibly vigorous and impactful painting that will attract the attention of all audiences. The loose style in painting and the break from traditional perspective drawing techniques broke from Academic standards of what was considered art, a difference in view that strongly defined Modern art.
