The Nativity with the Annunciation to the Shepherds Beyond is a stunning oil painting by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, one of the key figures of what is called the "Spanish Golden Century" or "Spanish Golden Age". Many Spanish artists created breathtaking and innovative works during this period, drawing from both the Italian and Dutch traditions and creating something unique, becoming a staple of quality in Europe. Many of the artworks produced were tied to religious institutions, especially Murillo's production, who lived his whole life in Sevilla. Working with these subjects, Murillo created a very complex body of work, in which lighting, composition, and attention to detail all play a great part. The Nativity with the Annunciation to the Shepherds Beyond merges two Biblical scenes to present the audience with tenderness.
Baroque art was from a period in history that dealt with contradictory tendencies. On the one hand, their environment was much more restricted and controlled than the Humanist tradition in the Renaissance, grounded by many scientific advances and a general defense of knowledge without restrictions. On the other, this was when daring artists completely reinvigorated European painting, and many personal approaches flourished. While there is variety in the previous period as well, the Baroque was marked by painters progressively adopted a better state of self-consciousness, as it can be seen, for instance, in Velazquez's Las Meninas. Murillo had a radical proposal as well, and even while working with Biblical narratives, he was capable of embodying them in a secular and less-idealized way.
The Nativity with the Annunciation to the Shepherds is a 154.3 x 124.5 cm oil painting. It was sold in 2007 in an event at the auction house Christie's for GBP 468,500. Murillo's authorship of the piece was confirmed in 2006 through a specialist since it was long owned by a private collector, and its antecedents were not clear. The picture's style represents Murillo's mid-phase, which is associated with his maturity.
Murillo integrates his early earthly palette with and his more colorful approach in the picture. The work is dominated by a yellowish-brown hue and dark zones, reminding us that it is a deep night. Light flows from many sources, such as baby Jesus himself at the picture's center, the candle that Joseph is covering, the three angels at the top, and the shepherds receiving at the annunciation further away, at the picture's right side. Through his unique handling of lighting, Murillo combined three different spaces: Mary and Joseph's, the heavenly dimension with the angels, and shepherds far away.
