Camille Pissarro was one of the most important painters of its time. He was several times mentioned by other Impressionists and artists that came after him as pivotal in the development of the history of art. Not only Pissarro was one of the oldest members of the Impressionist group. The artist was also one of the people in the group that made the most significant effort to keep the group together. He studied from essential people like Gustave Courbet.
Later in his life, he associated with Paul Signac and Georges Seurat and learned immensely from them. This development as an artist is very evident in his career, and he also had a contribution in challenging the Impressionist movement into turning into the Post-Impressionism.
Pissarro painted A Path in the Woods in the year of 1879. It shows a little path in the middle of a thick forest filled with autumn leaves on the trees and the ground. The small dirt curvy road is carved with wagon wheel, showing that at some point, there was heavy traffic there. Tall trees of thin and long dark trunks frame the way.
The leaves are small patches of yellow, brown, green, and orange. The chosen color palette suggests that this is either early morning or the end of an afternoon. The trees cast a new patch of shadows on the road. There is a subtle light that shines on the treetops and the ground. The different color patches between the darkness and light on the ground create a gorgeous relief.
The dirt road is also a complex palette of several tones. The background is a bright blue sky filled with gorgeous silky clouds.
The whole palette is natural and earthy. The subtle brushwork towards the treetops shows the leaves getting thinner and more delicate. The paint is thick all over the canvas.
The vertical layout shows the one-point perspective, often worked by Pissarro not only in natural scenes but also on urbanscapes.
The curvy road, along with the trees around it, forms a flow throughout the whole painting vertically. There is an impressive work with the volume of the way and trees on this piece.
