Pissarro painted Big Walnut Tree at Eragny over the year of 1892, in the late years of his career. Not only was he one of the first and oldest members of the Impressionist Group, but Camille Pissarro was an important beacon in art history more than once throughout his lifetime. He defended that the artists should not only pay homage to the sacred and holy but also be able to represent the mundane and the day-to-day situations in paintings.
These ideas and principles, along with changes implemented by the other Impressionists, developed a whole style that would become the characteristic of the countryside of France back in the day.
He also was an essential mark for artists that followed him. He mentored Cézanne throughout the beginning of his career, and later they became friends and work partners. Cézanne's subversive approach to painting has been often considered crucial for the Modernist movement to happen, and Pissarro's mentorship likely drove him there.
This late painting is gorgeous and impressive. One of the first things the viewer can notice is the unusual choices of the color palette. The public is no longer looking at a representational drawing of a landscape with green grass and blue skies. Instead, there is a varied mix of tones of pink and yellow. These colors compliment each other and create a thick texture.
The field is green, and the artist achieves this green shade by painting several small patches of blue, lilac, and yellow. A line of small round bushes and tall trees on the horizon divide the painting.
In the middle of the hills of this scape, there are some small houses with triangular rooftops. It shows a small village with no more than a few houses, all of them separated by a lot of grass, trees, and flowers. This village looks like it's isolated and distant from big urban centers like Paris and Marseille.
In the foreground, there is the walnut tree. These types of trees are usually broad, and often, they stand out in the middle of the vegetation. So is the case for this one, standing alone in the middle of the field. Two other small trees can show the real size of this magnificent shrub.
Little dots of paint cover the shape of the tree. The sun brightens the round top of the tree. Pissarro used some dark brown, green, and blue patches for the shadows.
