Pissarro completed this painting in 1890, the same year that he finally managed to leave London and return to France. Before that, he still produced several valuable paintings during his stay in the British Isles.
Upon his arrival in Britain, Pissarro felt frustrated and rejected, saying that his art would never catch there. But soon he met the Parisian art dealer called Paul Durand-Ruel. This man would help Pissarro sell his art for the rest of his life, even when they both came back to France. Around the same time, he got in touch with two crucial British artists: John Constable and J. M. W. Turner. This relationship changed Pissarro’s connection with British art, and it was a critical milestone in the artist’s life.
Among the essential influences these two artists had on Pissarro’s art career, they taught him about the importance of painting outside and using natural light as a reference for creating an atmosphere.
Most of his pieces from the time he spent in London are landscapes or natural scenes. It’s possible to see Pissarro’s incredible ability to reproduce the atmosphere and light on these paintings. This skill went along the artist for the rest of his career and became a vital trademark of Pissarro’s paintings.
This painting depicts a traditional view from the majestic Hyde Park. There are broad paths of soil framed by tall leafy trees. The artist painted the earthy soil in several patches of yellow, blue, lilac, and beige. It has chunks of light and shadow, showing the format of the shadows cast by the trees on the ground.
The large trees form a lane towards the horizon. The trunks are straight, painted with tones of light and dark brown. On the left-hand side, outside of the rays of the sun, the treetops are greener and more mysterious. The artist painted them with the small dots of color that form the beautiful texture of the leaves, a Pointillist technique.
On the right-hand side, the treetops are shining bright yellow with the sunlight. The color patches on these trees are more substantial and thicker, thus showing the texture of the leaves closer to the viewer.
Behind the line of trees on the back, there are several people, benches, and figures. Some of the characters are in the middle of the road, on a sun patch.
This painting has a sophisticated color palette. It has a bright and vivid aspect, and it shows a beautiful sunny day at the park
