The Pavillon de Flore and the Pont Royal is a meaningful painting of Pissarro’s career. This work is one of the pieces where the artists return to his old style after spending a couple of years improving his Pointillistic technique. In this return, the artist works with light, creating atmospheres with much more clarity.
Pissarro painted this gorgeous bridge in 1903. During this year, he moved back to Paris and checked into a hotel on the Quai Voltaire. From his window, he could see the ending of the Louvre architectural structure called Pavillon de Flore and the famed Pont Royal.
Pissarro was in his late years, and while most of the Impressionists had abandoned urbanscapes, he focused his attention in the city. His health was already giving in, and he struggled with an eye disease that would only allow him to paint during the warm months. Thus, checking into hotels and painting the views from his window to avoid the outdoor temperatures.
At this point, he had already worked with Signat and Seurat and had adopted several of the Post-Impressionism principles. In this painting, we see him returning to both the structure and color palette he used to work with during the beginning of his career when the Impressionist movement was peaking.
The river Seine is the large body of water in the middle of the painting. This water is painted with patches of white, green, and blue, creating a beautiful shade of teal blue. On the riverside, it’s possible to see one of the famous Bateaux boats that are part of the Parisian riverside until nowadays.
Over the river and right in the middle of the painting, there is the Pont Royal. Pont Royal is one of the main crossing paths between both sides of the river Seine. It is a significant architectural monument, and it’s located right in front of the Louvre Museum.
On the right, there is one of the endings of the Louvre Museum’s wing called Pavillon de Flore. This building is one of the essential Parisian landmarks. The painting shows its gorgeous architecture and immense size, as well as the traditional French flag waving from the top of its roof.
This painting has a very subtle and faded color palette. It reminds the colors used by the artist in his early career rather than the ones chosen in his later years. The sky is painted in beautiful tones of lilac and blue, contrasting with the silky cottony clouds
