The artists created View of Bazincourt in 1892. By this time, Pissarro had already gone through a lot of changes in his painting career. He was one of the single most relevant artists behind the Impressionist movement. His art has always been controversial and unique. Through that, he set trends and changed the history of art. He was one of the oldest and most influential artists of the Impressionist movement. Pissarro also was the single artist to take part in all the right exhibitions of the Impressionist group. He was a true mentor to Cézanne, that would bring such vital changes to art and would eventually be considered by Picasso and other Modernists as the father of Modernism.
He did profound studies in color and lighting through the French countryside. Eventually, the Franco-Prussian war broke out, and as the artists didn’t have French nationality, he had to flee to London. There, he was heavily influenced by John Constable and J. M. W. Turner. With them, he learned to paint out in the open and portray with perfection the effects of natural light.
When the painter came back to Paris, he met two significant artists: Paul Signac and Georges Seurat. They also had a considerable influence on his work, and this is where the artist started studying the technique of Pointillism, creating a color palette through thousands of tiny patches of color instead of mixing the color previously.
This painting shows a lot of his studies. It is a natural landscape with the sun shining right in front of the viewer, high up in the sky. The natural sunlight bathes the scene and creates shadows with the shapes of the trees. The horizon line divides the painting right in the middle, leaving the bottom half with a vast field of thick green grass. In the middle of this grass, there is a dirt path that crosses the painting horizontally.
A group of bushes and trees cast a shadow onto the grass on the left-hand side. The trees are tall and vertical.
On the back, there is a small hill covered in vegetation composed of exciting patches of color. As most of it is in the shadows, the effect of lack of sunlight is achieved by using blue and purple tones. These tones stand out against some yellow treetops that are shined by the sun.
The sky has a variety of tones of bright yellow and light blue. This variety creates the sensation that the sun is illuminating a thick and cloudy sky.
