Coming up as one of the first and oldest members of the Impressionist group, Camille Pissarro revolutionized the way people painted. The artist took part in not one, but two of the significant changes in art history. In his late years, he abandoned Impressionism and even declared the movement was dead, setting then the start of the campaign called Post-Impressionism. Paul Signac and Georges Seurat heavily influenced the artist's new approach to painting.
It is also relevant to mention that Pissarro was one of Cézanne's mentors. Cézanne has been considered the father of Modernism. Indeed, the innovative and subversive vein is a direct influence from Pissarro.
Camille Pissarro painted this piece around the year of 1894. In this same year, he wrote a letter to his son talking about the work and saying that he would then be struggling to finish the piece. The artist would claim that that an extra little something was missing, but he didn't know exactly what. Nearly one year later, he finished the piece. There are dense layers of paint on the young woman's face, and this might be one of the reasons.
The woman is sitting by the side of a lake. The cottony green grass is composed of many small dots of green and yellow. This style became stronger and more consistent towards the end of the career of the painter.
The shimmering lake reflects the feet of the lady and some light coming from the background. There is a blurry line between the edge of the cliff and the surface of the water. It's hard to tell when the pond starts.
Thick vegetation made of trees and bushes covers the background. Lots of trees and plants nearly occupy the scenery completely with orange and red leaves.
The pale woman has blushed cheeks. Her brown hair is pulled back and tied up on a knot. The sun is on her back and brightens the back of her head, and her brown skirt is pulled up. Her feet are steadily touching the water, almost like it was a solid base or if the water was shallow.
The color palette is very natural, with many tones of green and brown, even on her clothes.
