In 1599 Caravaggio had already fled Milan and arrived in Rome. Since his arrival, his life had been turbulent and unstable. First, he came with nothing on his pockets, nothing to wear and no provisions or money. He was then taken in by Giuseppe Cesari, whom he stayed for nearly three years until they had a severe disagreement. At some point, when Caravaggio was thrown out on the streets again, his piece The Cardsharps enchanted and amazed the Cardinal Francesco Maria del Monte, that decided to invite the artist to live under his household producing art.
Caravaggio accepted and spent the next few years developing new techniques and exploring religious (among other) subject matters. This was a time where religious paintings were gaining importance, and Caravaggio soon became the most famous painter of all Europe.
The unique characteristic of this piece is that it's an odd choice of a biblical passage, and it also shows the most intense, gruesome moment of it in details. Most artists were working on holy and divine paintings, filled with purity and sanctity. Caravaggio was known for his obsession with realism and the brutal existence of the real world, so this piece is one of the most critical milestones of his career. It shows the moment where Judith, after seducing Holofernes, the tyrant, gets into his chambers and slices his throat. Her maid is by her side, extending a piece of cloth so she can put away the blade. Judith has a disturbed facial expression and is wearing white and brown peasant clothes. Her hair is tied up, and her pale skin is brightened by a source of light that comes from the left side.
The maid is standing up beside her, colored with a darker palette and wearing dark beige clothes. The cloth in her hands is the same color. Holofernes is laying down and grabbing his pillow. His hair is being pulled by Judith letting his horrified facial expression face-to-face with the viewer. The background is pitch black, and only a thick velvet curtain is hanging above them, giving us the idea that this shallow environment almost looks like a stage. Judith Beheading Holofernes is one of the breakthrough pieces on Caravaggio’s career, as the tenebrism technique is more evident and developed than in previous paintings.
