At this moment in his life, Caravaggio had moved from Milan to Rome due to a series of reasons including an incident involving wounding a police officer. Caravaggio was going through a difficult life moment and arrived in Rome in extreme need. Caravaggio was searching for his style and knowingly wanted to develop some technique other than Mannerism. There was a high demand for works to decorate church walls, so religion was the primary subject matter and it was being explored by the most relevant artist of the time. This is one of the reasons why it's so difficult nowadays to find pieces from Caravaggio that approach mythology or other themes that are not mainly focused on sacred and biblical subjects. Although he did produce different pieces of art, they were not cared for, and thus few are preserved to this day. This fact makes Narcissus especially relevant. In it, Caravaggio tells the tale of Narcissus, that felt in love with his own reflection and died of passion.
The edge of the river divides the piece horizontally, so we see Narcissus on the top part and his reflection on the bottom. Narcissus is looking at himself, wearing beautiful clothes with large shoulder tops, pastel green pants, and beautiful ornaments on his chest and back. The whole color palette is earthy and warm, but smooth and not vibrant. Narcissus comes out of the surrounding shadows and contrasts with the background. And even though Caravaggio exploited the tenebrism, he didn’t use vibrant colors as he did on the Seven Works of Mercy, making the scene seem peaceful and angelic. We don’t see Narcissus eyes, as he stares straight into the eyes of his reflection beneath the water. The water reflects the same details we see on the top, but the reflection is darkened. Thus, the bright details on his sleeves and arms stand out and create even more contrast.
The environment is dark, so we don’t have an indication of place or landscape apart from the border of the river. The character is on the foreground, filling almost all the top half of the painting and creating a sense of familiarity. Caravaggio painted the figures of his pieces on the foreground, in a way that the viewer feels like he is part of the scene rather than starting at it, becoming one of his great innovations in the history of art.
