Currently, for safety, we're able to ship framed paintings only up to a certain size. Once the maximum size is reached, the framing option is automatically disabled.
However, if you are interested in stretching or framing a painting larger than 24x36 inches (60x90 cm), please contact one of our customer success associates or let us know in your order notes. We will send you a catalog of our large framing styles and pricing options.
Unframed rolled canvas orders will arrive rolled inside a protective tube with an extra 1.5" white canvas on all sides so you can easily frame it locally.
St. Matthew and the Angel was concluded in the year 1602. Caravaggio had a rough life. In the beginning of his years as a painter, he had to flee from Milan and arrived in Rome with nothing of his own. He then started to live under the house of Giuseppe Cesari, but his temper didn’t let him stay long without a disagreement. So, soon he was again on the streets and probably would have stayed that way if it wasn’t for the Cardinal Francesco Maria del Monte, that welcomed him into his household and provided for him so he could continue his artistic career. During these years he developed his famous dramatic style and the technique of tenebrism. He also focused his subject matter to religious pieces, which gained him more visibility and more commissions.
This piece was profoundly controversial and faced a tragic ending. The Contarelli Chapel commissioned two of Caravaggio’s paintings along with a central statue to be part of the main altar. Caravaggio cared immensely for this piece and applied all his dramatic realism in it. However, the Chapel rejected the artwork claiming that St. Matthew looked like a regular peasant, lacking holiness and sanctity. Caravaggio then produced another piece called The Inspiration of Saint Matthew, that remains on the chapel up to this date. This painting - that used to be part of the Kaiser Friedrich Museum - was destroyed in World War II.
Unfortunately, all the references and images registered to this date from this piece are pre World War II, so the images do not reflect the beauty and colors of the painting, like many other alike, even its successor, The Inspiration of Saint Matthew was properly restored after this date.
Saint Matthew is portrayed as an old man full of wrinkles. His hair and beard are clearly not groomed, and his clothes are far from proper. He looks disgruntled, and his feet are dirty as if he was working in the comfort of his home. The angel is comfortably leaning over his table, in a very casual pose. Although the Chapel rejected this work, it has unique and dramatic characteristics that made of Caravaggio an exceptional artist. He sticks with his natural warm color palette with soft earth tones, but this is a moment where the tenebrism is fully developed, so the figures stand out against the pitch black background.
