The Crucifixion of Saint Peter is an oil painting that shares space with the famed Conversion of Saint Paul, also created by Caravaggio. Tiberio Cerasi commissioned the paintings for the chapel but rejected Caravaggio’s first piece. As well as its pair, this painting is large and appalling. Caravaggio innovates on the choice of layout and creates a much more intense idea of personality and familiarity with his pieces. When we were used to seeing elements placed on the middle ground of paintings, with some landscape, and a pyramidal structures for the central figures, Caravaggio pulls all the main elements of his painting to the foreground, to the point that we barely see any signs of scenery. This makes the observer feel like he is properly inside the painting, becoming part of that moment.
The other common characteristic between the pair is that, as opposed to distributing the elements in a balanced way, Caravaggio throws everything out of balance, creating a beautiful idea of movement and lack of stability. Saint Peter is being crucified, as the executioners raise the cross, Saint Peter is laying with his feet up and his head down. Even his torso and stretched arm evoke this idea of lack of balance and instability. There is a nail holding his hand and feet to the cross, and it’s possible to see that his feet are bleeding.
One of the executioners is standing up and pulls a rope that lifts the bottom part of the cross. His back is turned to the viewer; thus we don’t see his face. Under the cross, using his body as a weight to lift the cross, there is another executioner. His face is not turned back, but his arm covers his face. The third one is on his feet, lifting the bottom of the cross. And once again, even though his face is turned to the front of the piece, once again his face is shielded by a very dark shadow. There is a blue drapery by the bottom right corner of the painting. Around them, there is rocky soil, and a larger shape that seems to be a bag or a sack of something spilled all over the ground.
As well as in Conversion of Saint Paul, in this piece, Caravaggio uses light and shadow to draw the attention to the most important elements and make the other ones secondary figures, even though all of them divide the foreground. Saint Peter is extremely brightened, and we can see all his facial expressions and the details on his face.

1st Art Gallery provides a full warranty covering manufacturing and material defects for paintings purchased from our website. The warranty covers damage for normal use. Damage caused by incidents such as accidents or inappropriate use are not covered.
Depending on the degree of damage to the warranted painting, it will either be repaired or replaced. This warranty service is provided free of charge.

use an existing frame, or frame it locally, you may choose to order your painting with a stretching service,
meaning that it will arrive mounted on wooden bars.
If you're considering not framing your painting at all, you may opt for a Gallery Wrap. The term Gallery Wrap refers to the way the canvas is stretched, which is by wrapping it around thick stretcher bars, about 1.5 inch thick, with the canvas being secured to the back rather than the sides of those bars.
