Christ and a Boy is a religious painting by Carl Heinrich Bloch. He was one of the most famous Danish artists of his time and was highly praised for his historical, mythological, and religious artworks. Christ and a Boy tells one of the scenes of Jesus Christ's life narrated in Mark's Gospel. While giving a sermon, Jesus stated that whoever receives a child is accepting Christ as well and that the ones that seek to be the first shall be the last. The image is painted in the Academic and smooth manner that Carl Bloch was deeply admired during his time.
Christ and a Boy display a very subdued color palette: white, black, brown, and green. The canvas has a rectangular shape, emphasizing Jesus's whole figure. Christ looks to the viewer while his right hand rests on the child's head, and his left one points at the young one. A halo on his head is painted in very light yellow, which gives a contour against the deep black background. In 1849, Carl Heinrich Bloch was enrolled at the Royal Danish Academy. In 1852 he joined a Figure Drawing class taught by Wilhelm Marstrand, and in the next year, he received a silver medal for one of his drawings. This was his beginning as a professional painter.
Bloch lived from 1859 to 1866 in Italy. In 1855 the painter had received a grant from the Royal Academy, which allowed him enough money to travel to the Netherlands and study Rembrandt's pictures up close. The Dutch painter then became a significant influence for Bloch. He then decided to settle in the city of Rome, which was then regarded as the art capital of the world. There the works by the Old Masters became another of his fundamental influences. In 1859, while living in Italy, Bloch received an important commission: Jacob Chrisitan Jacobsen, an industrialist and brewer, built a new church in the Frederiksborg castle. He commissioned 23 pictures of Christ's life to be part of the church, and as such, Bloch became associated with religious subjects. Many years after his death, his work still hangs in many Danish houses as Biblical images, and some are even in educational materials.
