Christ at Gethsemane [detail #1] is an oil painting by the artist Carl Heinrich Bloch. During a great part of his life, Bloch was praised for being one of his country’s most impressive painters. After being immensely praised for his The Liberation of Prometheus in an 1865 exhibition in Denmark, Bloch received a commission that changed his career and life; J. C. Jacobsen, an industrialist and brewer, asked him for 23 pictures of Jesus Christ’s life for Frederiksborg’s chapel. The work not only earned Bloch’s national reputation but also made him a faithful Christian.
Christ at Gethsemane is an oil painting. The picture is based on one of his works at the Frederiksborg chapel. Jesus is shown with his eyes closed. His hands are lying on the ground, and their position seems to suggest that he was praying. To his right side, an angel is holding and caressing him. Light falls on both of them, giving a dramatic tone to the scene. The picture is painted realistically and employs a complementary contrast color scheme. While Jesus’ robes are red, the background is green, making his figure pop out more in relation to the background.
When he was only 15, he entered the Royal Danish Academy, where he learned oil painting techniques. By 1852, Carl Bloch was participating in local exhibitions and receiving awards. In some years, he received a grant from the Academy to complete his education in Rome, which was Europe’s cultural center. Bloch seized the chance to visit many other countries, such as the Netherlands, where he was deeply touched by Rembrandt’s works, France and Belgium. He settled in Italy and kept studying the work of the Old Masters.
It’s possible to understand better Carl Heinrich Bloch’s body of work through the period in which he belonged: Academicism, which existed right before its complete opposite, Modernism. The pedagogy and thought behind Academicians had Neo-Classical roots: it sprung from the Académie des Beaux-Arts established by Jacques Louis David. It emphasized technical skills and the principles of harmony and balance; it took its inspiration from Greek art and Renaissance painters to try to emulate them at their best. Bloch was not only a student at the Royal Danish Academy, but he became a teacher there as well.
