Consolator is an oil painting by the artist Carl Heinrich Bloch, a Danish painter who became highly respected during his lifetime. He was an Academic, and it was through the Royal Danish Academy that he could make most of his feats. The painter worked mainly with mythological, religious, and historical painting. It would be his Biblical narratives, though, which had a more significant impact on his country and became part of their collective imaginary. Consolator shows an image for which Christ is very famous: he seems to be in the midst of a sermon, and there are many figures around him.
Consolator is an oil painting. The image presents one of the most recognizable representations of Christ, displaying a fierce but welcoming look, his arms raised to the sky as a sign of grace and acceptance. His tunic is white, and the background is a blue gradient, going from a light blue to black, as a way to make a frame inside the frame. Below Jesus’s arms, there is a crowd of listeners begging for salvation. There are older men, adults, and a child, who looks at the viewer with a surprised and curious look.
In 1849, Carl Heinrich Bloch became a student at the Royal Danish Academy. In the next few years, he applied himself deeply, and after entering Wilhelm Marstrand’s Figure Model classes, he began to exhibit his drawings. In 1855 he won a grant, traveling to France, Belgium, The Netherlands, and Italy. In the latter, he could study many works that were fundamental to develop his artistic vision.
The Academic painting was, on the one hand, about virtuosity, the skill in depicting challenging poses and different surfaces, in giving a sculptural quality to bodies, in the constant and prolonged study of the Old Masters, and in a favoring of the subject, especially religious and mythological painting, as a way to sustain Renaissance principles. In Bloch’s case, the color is another example of a Renaissance influence: he favors neutral and primary colors, with a color palette reminiscent of Raphael Sanzio. But there is the addition of black, something that Renaissance painters didn’t use, and in this case, it comes through Rembrandt’s influence; Bloch would base his use of lighting on the Dutch master.
