The Resurrection is an oil on canvas by painter Carl Heinrich Bloch, one of the most famous Danish artists of all time. Heinrich Bloch was an Academic painter through and through; he excelled in oil painting techniques, treating his subjects with a dramatic yet realistic approach. As was usual in Academic education, Bloch ended up working mainly with the top 3 genres: religious, mythological, and historical painting. He became mostly associated with his religious works, many of them being shared and hailed in religious institutions. The Resurrection shows, probably, one of the most intense moments in Jesus Christ's narrative.
The Resurrection's central subject is Jesus Christ. There is the ever-present strong yellow halo around his head, and his arms rise to the skies. He wears a white tunic, and the entire background is very dark, done in brown hues to render the mountain behind him. To each of his sides are almost identical angels in mirrored poses; one of them is praying while the other is with his hands on the chest. At Jesus' feet, one can notice white flowers, symbolizing life.
Since his childhood, Bloch's parents hoped that he would enter into the Navy. His early education was in schools that prepared young boys for the Sea Cadet entry exam. In one of these classes, in a drawing lecture, Bloch fell in love with art. His teacher was a landscape artist, Theodor Ludwig Restorff. After their classes together, Bloch made up his mind about pursuing a painting career. In 1849, he enrolled at the Royal Danish Academy. The couple next years were already showing a promising career since soon enough, Bloch was participating in the Academy's contests. He won a grant in 1855 that allowed him to live for ten years abroad and complete his education.
Heinrich Bloch thoroughly followed the Academic principles of artmaking, and his passion for drawing became a steady habit. In the logic presented by Academics, it was drawing that would help the students develop knowledge on perspective, proportion, and anatomy. As seen in many of the artist's works, Bloch took a taste in challenging himself to depict fabrics and other complex materials such as metal. During his time in Italy, he indeed observed the Old Masters carefully. Many of his pictures seem to stem from the Renaissance palette, using primary colors and green; another influence for his dramatic and contrasting use of lighting was Rembrandt.
