The Monk by the Sea is a fantastic 110 × 171.5 cm (43 × 67.5 in) oil painting by Caspar David Friedrich. The Monk by the Sea is part of the Alte Nationalgalerie’s collection in Berlin and was painted in 1809. The first time the work was exhibited publicly was in a show at the Berlin Academy in 1810, along with another famous Caspar David Friedrich piece, The Abbey in the Oakwood. The painter’s fame at this period was such that both works were purchased by King Frederick Wilhelm III, the German Monarch during Friedrich’s time, although the painting was harshly criticized when first shown.
The Monk by the Sea was painted on a large rectangular canvas. A lonely figure, tiny to the picture point-of-view, is standing on barren land, close to the sea. The horizon line is very low, making the sky occupy most of the picture’s space. The figure is a lonely monk who wears a long dark garment similar to the color of the sea. The terrain could be a high rock formation or a lonesome pebble in a gigantic ocean. The land’s color is a pale white with no vegetation or animals, and the color of the sea is almost uniform, only varying at the areas where whitecaps of the waves are forming. The picture has an intense sense of solitude, silence and seems to allude to longing.
The beginning of the sky is a turquoise deep blue, and it seems that Friedrich scratched and painted over some of these areas, giving a pictorial look to them. Through x-ray processes, it was discovered that he had initially placed two ships on the horizon, which aren’t present in the final image. The deep turquoise sky slowly becomes a blurring soft blue and transitions from intense, saturated color to a subtle depiction of clouds. Above the clouds, an even light blue appears with some deep blue blotches close to the top right corner. A white moon and some stars are also depicted in this area, and they were rendered very subtly.
Curiously, The Monk by the Sea became a highly influential work, provoking similar interests in Gustave Courbet and James McNeill Whistler. They also explored the imagery of lonely figures close to the sea. For his search for a depiction that provoked the sublime, Friedrich influenced abstract painters such as Mark Rothko.
