FRAMING INFORMATION
1st Art Gallery offers the option to receive your painting ready to hang or rolled in a tube.
Currently, for safety, we're able to ship framed paintings only up to a certain size. Once the maximum size is reached, the framing option is automatically disabled.
However, if you are interested in stretching or framing a painting larger than 24x36 inches (60x90 cm), please contact one of our customer success associates or let us know in your order notes. We will send you a catalog of our large framing styles and pricing options.
Unframed rolled canvas orders will arrive rolled inside a protective tube with an extra 1.5" white canvas on all sides so you can easily frame it locally.

It is always interesting to attempt categorizing an artist such as the American Charles M. Russell, mostly because of the challenge that a task like that poses. While some would, due to his treatment especially of Native Americans, categorize his work as Orientalist, which in itself is quite ironic, being that the artist was striving to depict his perspective on the American West. Even with the cardinal confusion, Russell’s idealized depiction of the Native American people as an idyllic, exotic, almost mystical group of people, taken from the white man’s perspective without actually getting into what those people’s experiences were like, although even such a removed point of view was still quite progressive for the American society of his time, in the early 20th century.
Conversely, it might be more responsible to err on the side of caution when categorizing, naming his style as Cowboy Art or Western, especially considering how influential his depictions were on the Western movie industry. In fact, it wouldn’t be too farfetched to posit that much of how Western cinema portrayed the Wild West, that rather short time period in the late 19th century when the west of America was settled and developed, was based much more on work like Russell’s than on actual records and imagery from the time, even though photography had already become somehow popularized then. To an extent, it might also be said that the preference for using the so-called Cowboy art as inspiration comes from works such as this oil on canvas from 1915, where the focus is less on recording history than on creating a narrative, which Russell did with pure brilliance.
Here, Russell humorously paints a cowboy on a winter hunting trip who, having shot his prey down, now considers how exactly he is supposed to retrieve his prize from the outcropping where it seems to have accidentally fallen. The choice of making it a winter scene adds an inevitable drama, which is heightened by the color palette dominated by shades of blue. With that, Russell makes it clear that the cold is a factor in this situation, which would tell us that, without his quarrel, this hunter is in dire straits. That does not ruin the humor of the scene, but instead adds a level of dark humor.
