Claude Oscar Monet painted a portrait of his future wife in the artwork entitled Alice Hoschede In The Garden, in the year of 1881. The artist was married to Camille during the 1870s, but she sadly passed away of tuberculosis only nine years into the marriage. Camille’s death was very hard on the painter, causing an impact on his art. Monet was left with two small children and a lot of financial insecurities, as his artistic career had not yet launched. During this challenging period, Alice Hoschedé, a family friend, stepped in to help the artist and they began a romantic relationship. She had many children from her previous marriage and took in Monet’s two infants as well, creating a large and happy family.
During the year Monet painted Alice Hoschede In The Garden, he and his partner lived in the city of Poissy – a decision the artist didn’t enjoy. The couple got married many years later, in 1892, only after Ernst Hoschedés’ death. As an Impressionist, Monet worked mainly en plein air, meaning he chose to paint outdoors. The artists of this movement would usually meet in groups to portray a particular landscape, and exchange information and knowledge of their painterly craft. They strived to observe the natural sunlight and the effects it has on a landscape and its figures. After a point in his career, Monet would conclude some paintings in the studio, causing criticism from his colleagues.
In this oil painting, Alice sits by a table in a garden while knitting. The artwork was done in an extremely Impressionistic manner, with a vibrant and complementary color palette, as well as expressive brush strokes. The grass has a high contrast of light and dark – having bright green pigments where the sun hits. Behind the model, blue and green bushes grow, partially covering the dark metal fence behind it. All of the surrounding colors seem to reflect on Alice’s white dress, that the artist shaded with light blue pigments. She also wears a blue decorated hat and appears to knit something with the same colors seen in her dress. There is a dark tree hovering the scene in tonalities of brown, black and purple. A river painted in blue and green can be seen behind the tall tree that casts shades on the garden.
