Water-Lilies, Evening Effect

Claude Oscar Monet painted Water-Lilies, Evening Effect in 1899 and it represents one of the many portrayals of his beloved water lily pond in his home in Giverny. He and his wife, Alice Hoschedé, had moved to the small town in 1883, after finding a home for their large family – a combination of eight children.

At first, the painter was not financially stable enough for his new family structure, and they began renting the house. Eventually, Monet’s fame grew, and he was able to sell paintings all over Europe and even overseas, in the United States of America. After this, he bought their home – in which he lived in for the rest of his days – as well as the adjacent property. The artist used this newly acquired land to expand his fantastical garden. Now with the help of multiple gardeners and housekeepers, Monet had the tools necessary to build a spectacular garden, a dream for any painter to portray that can be visited to this day.

Coming to Europe as an opposing source of inspiration than the Classic Greek art, the Japanese produced woodcut prints in Ukiyo-e that fascinated the Impressionists. These artworks featured vivid colors, dark, defined contours, and many subjects of nature alongside humankind. Monet was particularly inspired by this foreign culture, and it reflected in his garden. He installed a small pond with exotic blossoming water lilies that he imported from South America and North Africa – which gave him problems with authorities, but the painter’s love for his garden was more prominent, and he was able to keep the lilies. Over the pond, Monet also built a Japanese bridge, in which he depicts in many paintings.

As an Impressionist, Monet painted mainly en plein air – or in other words, he worked outside. This group of artists would usually join in groups to seek for beautiful landscapes to portray, but Monet was the only one who crafted his own view. In Water-Lilies, Evening Effect, the artist gave attention to a detail of the pond, not showing the bridge. The artwork features two lilies, slightly to the right of the canvas. The flowers are a light pink, white and have yellow cores. The leaves floating in the dark blue, green and brown water were painted in green and light blue pigments. A small pink flower bud sticks out of the water, giving the painting a particular detail.
