Claude Oscar Monet created a beautiful garden in Giverny which exists until this day and receives visitors from around the world. The painter found the small town in 1883 and fell in love with is. Along with his wife and many children, the artist moved into a rented house where he would spend the rest of his life. Even though the Monet found the ideal location to settle down and enjoy a peaceful life, he still strived to develop a successful career as a painter. To achieve his goal, Monet traveled through Europe and the Mediterranean coast during most of the 1880s and producing as much as he could.
Eventually, the Impressionist’s hard work paid off, and he became well known for his paintings, especially landscapes. He invested in his home and family, finally purchasing the house they began renting and hiring housekeepers to help his wife and eight kids. Monet also bought the surrounding properties so that he could expand his beloved garden. His living creation grew so much; he had as many as six gardeners to help maintain it.
The Impressionists had a passion for cultures from the Orient, especially the Japanese art. Monet collected many woodcut prints and exchanged them with his colleagues. This exotic art fascinated modern painters who were tired of the classic influence of the ancient Greeks and the Renaissance painters. Portraying scenes of incredible nature in vibrant colors, Japanese artists like Hokusai and Hiroshige inspired the Impressionists to come in contact with their natural surroundings. The group of painters would mainly work en plein air, or outdoors in French. This enabled them to experience and to observe the subject they portrayed under natural lighting, and they worked fast to capture the fleeting essence of the sun.
The oil painting Water-Lilies XV is part of Monet’s series of most extensive production, with about two-hundred and fifty artworks altogether. The Impressionist’s love for the Japanese culture led him to install a pond filled with water lilies and a Japanese bridge over it, which became his favorite part of his garden. The artist used blue tonalities and hints of purple on the water, as well as loose green brush strokes to depict the reflecting vegetation on the water. There are some blossoming lilies in shades of pink and yellow, but the pond is mostly filled with green leaves with white highlights.
