The oil painting entitled Archduke Leopold Wilhelm of Austria in his Gallery created by the Flemish Baroque painter David Teniers the Younger shows the Archduke Leopold Wilhelm of Austria amongst parts of his extensive collection of paintings. The work is dated 1651 and kept at the Musées Royaux des Beaux Arts de Belgique in Brussels.
Teniers and Archduke Leopold had a long-standing relationship. Leopold, being the younger brother of one of the most powerful figures of seventeenth-century Europe, the Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand III., was himself an important political figure of the time as well as a distinguished art collector.
Teniers positioned the archduke together with two other courtiers in an arched hallway. Leopold is standing in the center of the painting and is portrayed in profile. The other two men are showing him various works on paper, which the archduke very intensively studies. On the desk, small marble and bronze sculptures are positioned. To either side of the entrance to the hallway, many paintings are hung frame to frame on the walls: portraits, landscapes, religious and mythological scenes of varying formats and by various Italian masters, such as Titian, Giorgione, Raphael, Veronese, Carracci, and Parmigianino.
In the top right-hand corner, one of the most well-known paintings in the collection is displayed: The Death of Acteon by Titian, which today can be seen at the National Gallery in London. This way of showing the paintings makes it possible for the beholder to grasp the quality of the archduke’s collection at one glance. Even though all featured pictures are real ones, the room they are displayed in is probably an artificial space created by the artist rather than the actual location of his collection in his Brussels palace.
In total, Archduke Leopold commissioned Teniers with ten paintings to record his art collection in the 1650s. These so-called ‘gallery’ paintings or ‘pictures of collections’ are a painting genre that developed in the early seventeenth century and was very popular amongst European collectors. For them, it was a sophisticated way of creating a visual record of their collection. Furthermore, Archduke Leopold seems to have been keen on recording his collection for generations to come. He also commissioned Teniers to work with twelve engravers on the ‘Theatrum Pictorium’ (Painted Theatre), a catalog of the Italian paintings in the archduke’s collection, in which the paintings were reproduced as engravings.
