Ballet Dancers is a strong, beautiful artwork from Edgar Degas. It represents a few dancers preparing themselves for an act. There are five visible ballerinas on the room. The whole scene is very Impressionistic and almost abstract. The room and characters are drawn in energetic gestures with complicated brushstrokes, to the point that they look almost abstract. This is one of the most abstract pieces Edgar Degas produced around this period, where he was experimenting with different techniques and losing his commitment with the realistic art. Even so, he liked to be called a realist artist.
It’s even more plausible to place Degas as a realist artist taking into account his subject matter than the style he constantly improved along the years. Despite painting ballet, dances, and Opera stages, he would rarely focus on the greatness of the spectacle. He would more often paint rehearsals and backstages, or ballerinas preparing to get onto the stage.
In this artwork, there is a ballerina in the foreground putting on her ballet shoes. As she is in the front, she is represented with in-depth details and beautiful defined shapes. It’s possible to see her vibrant red hair, shaded by dark lines, showing the bun on the top of her head. She faces the viewer, and the pale tone of her smooth face contrasts with the dark shadow behind her. Her skin is also shaded in blue, contrasting with the warm tones on her cheek and arms. This different approach to color use is a traditional Impressionist technique. She is kneeling on a green bench that fades into the background, to the point where it touches the wall, only thin lines with no filling are drawn.
The other ballerinas share the red hair, but the vibrancy fades as they are placed more and more to the foreground. This technique enhances our notion of depth and volume on the piece. They are all portrayed in pearly white dresses. The dresses are painted white and beige - similar to the color of the light source, placed on the right side of the panel. It’s possible to see that the other ballerinas are warming up, stretching and striking poses. Apart from the light source placed on the foreground, there are some colored forms on the background that suggest another room and a large window placed right in the middle.
