1st Art Gallery offers the option to receive your painting ready to hang or rolled in a tube.
Currently, for safety, we're able to ship framed paintings only up to a certain size. Once the maximum size is reached, the framing option is automatically disabled.
However, if you are interested in stretching or framing a painting larger than 24x36 inches (60x90 cm), please contact one of our customer success associates or let us know in your order notes. We will send you a catalog of our large framing styles and pricing options.
Unframed rolled canvas orders will arrive rolled inside a protective tube with an extra 1.5" white canvas on all sides so you can easily frame it locally.
It is quite common to see Edgar Degas being portrayed as fundamentally linked to ballerinas in his artistic career, but the fact of the matter is that the artist was not so much interested specifically in ballet practitioners, but instead on movement, and it just so happened that ballerinas as a subject matter enabled him to combine three aspects that were important for his art: the beauty of action, the transformative power of light, and, always important for the artist, the most practical issue of being commercially viable.
This oil on canvas, painted between 1885 and 1890, exemplifies in unmistakable terms that tendency, portraying the eponymous dancers in a rather unorthodox manner, subverting traditional composition rules. In possession of the Museu de Arte de São Paulo, in Brazil, the piece emphasizes that the reality is much larger than what can be included in a canvas.
That effect is achieved with the illusion of movement that guides the observer’s eyes. The ballerina further in the foreground, which is dressed in a different color from the others, indicating that she would be a soloist, is only partially in the frame of the painting. That alone establishes a flurry of movement in the scene, creating a narrative. From there, the observer’s eyes move from ballerina to ballerina, from pose to pose, all the way to the last one, whose left arm is portrayed many times to indicate rapid movement.
Despite the simplification in their shapes, to a point where the faces are merely indicated by the shape of the nose and the shadows created by their brows, the dancers are alive with emotion and feeling, their body language communicating a wealth of meaning. Behind them, the background is but a light blur, like there is more of a spectacle happening there, but the focus is on the ballerinas.
Which explains the reasoning behind Degas’ preference for painting ballerinas, for movement, precise and full of emotion, is their craft. Their bodies are drawn by the stage lights, enabling the painter to portray its effect on the human body creatively. Further, their art is full of intensive plastics, which offers a rich aesthetic, making the work more marketable. By this, we mean that even if it wasn’t the most important reason for Degas’ choice of subject matter, he made a commercially happy decision.

Free shipping is included in the price of the painting. Once the painting is ready and dry enough to ship, we will roll it and ship it in a sturdy cardboard tube.
We always ship express via courier to ensure your order reaches you as soon as possible - normally within three business days. The total delivery time from the moment you place your order until the package is delivered to your door is normally between three to four weeks.
If, in the unlikely event you were dissatisfied with the painting after reviewing it in person, it can be returned for a full refund for up to 365 days after delivery.
When you receive the painting; you are free to return it for more revisions or else for a full refund minus our actual shipping cost -- which is, on average, $35 per painting.
1st Art Gallery provides a full warranty covering manufacturing and material defects for paintings purchased from our website. The warranty covers damage for normal use. Damage caused by incidents such as accidents or inappropriate use are not covered.
Depending on the degree of damage to the warranted painting, it will either be repaired or replaced. This warranty service is provided free of charge.
