Edgar Degas’ portraits are known for their complexity and psychological depth. This is an example of a number of studies that the artist did on the very specific theme of women leaving the bath and drying themselves. Most of these portraits were done in oil pastel and one of them was even bought by Claude Monet.
In the intense piece, a woman is in the center of the square piece and is the focal point of the whole scene. A few of these portraits show more of the room or environment, but in the case of this one, all we can see is the chair the woman uses to dry herself and the tub behind her, in front of what looks like heavy curtains or fabrics.
One of the most remarkable features of this piece is the deep texture, that makes it look like the observer is looking through an etched glass. This texture is a result of the work with pastel and the technique chosen by the artist. This technique can be observed in many other pieces, but the intensity of the texture varies a lot.
As she dries herself, she lifts one arm and turns her torso to the left, so her backbone forms a beautiful curve that defines the light and shadow contrast of the piece. A soft light is coming from the left, possibly through a window or from a lamp, so the right side of her body is shaded with a cold blue tone.
She sits on a rattan chair that is drawn with yellow and blue lines of pastel. On top of the base color, the lines stand out on a much brighter tone. On the chair, there lays an orange vivid fabric. The fabric folds are lined in a darker orange color, but there are few shades on this fabric.
Behind the woman and the white cloth, there is the blue tub. The tub is drawn in a steel blue, also lighter on the right and darker on the left. The texture of the lines drawn on the tub is smoother, giving it a more unruffled finishing. There is a complex texture that forms the ground, making it look like a carpet. The ground is colored in smaller strokes of red, yellow and dark steel blue pastel.
The whole painting is finished in these vigorous and solid lines. The texture that forms the final result added with the choice of colors and shadows is a beautiful illustration of a perfect Impressionist piece.
