The Start of the Hunt represents one of the two great passions that Edgar Degas had over his lifetime: ballet and hunting. He painted a few studies and paintings depicting hunting and horse races. This artwork is an early piece from 1865 and shows a strong influence of the academic art on Degas’ career. Most of his pieces from this era do not experiment with new and different compositions, color palettes, and subject matters.
This is a classical piece; some men are riding their horses and preparing for the hunt. It’s an oil painting, so the whole composition is smooth and fluid. It is a horizontal landscape where valleys and hills shape the reliefs of the field. There is a sunset atmosphere created by the warm yellow sky that fades into a darker tone to the right side of the painting. The field is mostly moss green but has several shades and tones of green and brown. To the right, on the nearest hill, some trees are roughly shaped by brush strokes, and there are some darker treetops. All the men are set on the hill seen on the foreground.
Five men are in evidence, as they were placed closest to the frontal part of the scape. Their clothing is all alike; white vests, malted white pants, bright red hunting coats, and black hats. In this group of five men, there are three brown horses and a black one detached from the group. Two legs from this horse are not entirely colored; they are only shaped with lines. One of the men is not mounted, and it appears as if he is helping with one of the mounted men’s saddle.
The hill goes down, and we can observe a few more men mounting their horses with fewer details are visible as they fade into the slope. One man stands out from the group; he is on the right of the composition and mounts the only visible white horse. As the light comes from the right side of the painting, this men’s clothes and horse were portrayed in lighter colors of the same palette used on the rest of their garments. Few yellow dots were used to sprinkle some flowers on the grass. On the bottom right, there is a muddy road, probably the path from which the men came from in their journey.
