The seascape entitled Girls Playing in Surf was painted by the American artist Edward Henry Potthast. He became quite famous after his death for his Impressionistic portrayals of the New England and New York shores and the people enjoying leisure at the beach. His Modern style brings new life to ocean and shoreline scenes, making his body of work unforgettable.
Potthast began his career as a lithographer, working for the Strobridge Lithography Company. Although this printing technique requires artistry of its own, it is not similar to painting a canvas, which Potthast had an interest in. By the 1880s, he was learning under Thomas Noble in his hometown of Cincinnati and would later travel to Munich and Paris to continue his studies.
Although he developed a great passion for painting and strived to learn more, Potthast continued his career as a lithographer until his late thirties. This could be a reason why it took time for his oeuvre to earn the recognition it deserves. The painting Girls Playing in Surf is a brilliant example of how Potthast portrayed the beach scenes he witnessed in a Modern way.
As an American Impressionist, Potthast used loose brushstrokes and a bright color palette in Girls Playing in Surf. As the title states, two young girls are exploring the shallow waters of the beach shore. The artist beautifully rendered their reflection on the watery surface, as the girl on the left is almost sitting on the ground while reaching for something in the sand. The girl on the right is standing and hunched over, curiously observing their discovery.
Both children are wearing white knee-length dresses and feature a fascinator in their hair depicted in a single stroke, possibly a lace tied in a bow. Because of Potthast’s expressive brushstrokes, many details are left for the viewer’s imagination, like the girl’s expression. The light blue waves splash in the beach shore behind the figures and high on the composition. The color palette features light colors that capture the bright and sunny atmosphere of the beach. The wet sand in the forefront completely engulfs the children’s feet and brings a blue tint to the ochre-colored ground as it reflects the color of the sky.
