Mid-winter at Abinger Hammer, near Dorking is a beautiful painting by Edward Wilkins Waite. The original artwork was painted in 1892. Edward Wilkins Waite was one of the British Impressionists of the 19th-century, and early Modern French painters visually informed his work. Still, like many of his peers from Britain, they are more traditional, even though they played a significant role in turning English art into a modern direction. Working for decades with the landscape genre, Wilkins Waite developed a precise manner focused on sunny days and Britain's countryside's local and enchanting sites.
Here, he is entirely in his comfort zone regarding his thematic choice. The lighting plays a significant part in reaching the aesthetic impact of the work, akin to what the Hudson River School, especially the luminists, were doing at the time. Wilkins Waite's incredibly detailed realistic manner favored an expressive use of lighting, albeit in a more subtle and traditional way than what the French painters were striving for.
The snow takes the lower area. It would be a gleaming white if it were a full sunny day, as with most of Edward Wilkins Waite's pictures, yet here, it has a greyish look since the sun is already setting. A trail of footsteps goes through the painting's middle area from the lower center. Since it's winter, as the scenery and the title indicates, the trees are leafless and extending their branches, highlighted against the intensely bright sky.
The painting has a strong contrast. The branches are done with black and have white details of the snow resting on them. The branches and their thin extensions create interesting visual patterns that conduct the audience's gaze. In the picture's middle, there is a black house with a snow-covered roof. The sky was painted with a saturated orange, starting with the strongest colors and then going to a lighter, vibrating yellow. On the right side, far away, mountains are visible, while the left side is covered by big trees, bushes, and other vegetation. Mid-winter at Abinger Hammer, near Dorking is a stunning landscape that impresses any audience.
