A preeminent name in American Academic Art, the Orientalist Edwin Lord Weeks spent most of his adult life between traveling and studying. His travels would initially take him to the same destinations once visited by his masters, Jean-Léon Gérôme and Léon Bonnat, which included Marocco and Egypt, and later went beyond, to India. That last destination would prove extremely invaluable for Weeks’ career, as most of his most celebrated work would be either produced there in a temporary studio or, more commonly, based on sketches and photographs taken there. In that context, some places would often seem to have inspired Weeks more than others.
Portrayed in this beautiful oil on canvas is one of those places. Believed to have been produced circa 1885, the painting consists of an everyday scene taking place outside the gates of a great mosque outside of Delhi, India. The same mosque would also be portrayed by Weeks in Old Blue Tiled Mosque Outside Of Delhi India, painted in the same year, which is recognizable by the intricate pattern of the tiles on the wall. It is interesting to note that Weeks portrayed an ancient and decayed structure, which grants the scene a particular character of people living among ruins. In fact, for a Western audience, it would seem like people in India endured the harshest of conditions, a narrative often reinforced by Orientalist painting, a characteristic from which most criticisms of that genre derive
Based on the pattern of the tiles, the Mughal architecture of the arches, and the location near Delhi that Weeks ascribes to it, it is very likely that this mosque that enthralled the American painter so much was one Khairul Manazil, a sixteenth-century mosque located just outside Delhi. Built by the foster mother of Emperor Akbar the Great, the mosque sits opposite to one of the oldest forts in Delhi, and its name means “the most auspicious of houses.” Not long after its construction, the mosque would be converted into a madrasa, which is an Arabic word for any learning institution. That means that Weeks is most likely to have painted not a mosque, but a madrasa, although the actual distinction might have been lost to him, a type of alienation from the pictured culture that is also commonly found in Orientalists.
