Currently, for safety, we're able to ship framed paintings only up to a certain size. Once the maximum size is reached, the framing option is automatically disabled.
However, if you are interested in stretching or framing a painting larger than 24x36 inches (60x90 cm), please contact one of our customer success associates or let us know in your order notes. We will send you a catalog of our large framing styles and pricing options.
Unframed rolled canvas orders will arrive rolled inside a protective tube with an extra 1.5" white canvas on all sides so you can easily frame it locally.

An essential name among American Orientalists, Edwin Lord Weeks followed in the footsteps of his mentors Jean-Léon Gérôme and Léon Bonnat and went beyond. Inspired by the travels that inspired his masters, Lord Weeks spent most of his adult life either traveling or studying under them, resulting in a body of work that would depict much of what Westerners would think of as having been the exotic East. In true Orientalist fashion, those depictions are often scenes shrouded in mystery and fascination of situations that might seem reasonable for locals but incredibly unusual for the Westerner’s eye. In other cases, Lord Weeks would paint genuinely incredible examples of Eastern Civilization, and this painting is an example of the latter.
Finished in 1890, this oil on canvas is now in possession of the Hawkins art Collection at the Annmary Brown Memorial of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. It was first included in the collection’s 1913 catalog, meaning that it must have been purchased for the collection either directly from the artist or his estate. The painting depicts one of the most important pilgrimage sites of Sikhism, the Harmandir Sahib, which means “Abode of God” in Punjabi, or Darbar Sahib, meaning “Exalted Holy Court” in the same language, located in the city of Amritsar in the Punjab region of India. The temple, seen here on the right of the painting beyond the human-made lake, is often called by English language foreigners The Golden Temple due to its outer walls being covered in gold leafing, creating the remarkable effect that Lord Weeks so expertly replicated in this work.
Instead of presenting the architectural marvel by itself, Lord Weeks chooses to portray it as part of a wider scene, giving it context and life, which serves to bring to the observer the same sensation felt by the artist when experiencing this sublime setting. The Golden Temple is then portrayed within the human-made lake it was built on, and the vantage point for the painting is at the banks of said lake, encompassing in its composition the Sikh pilgrims, who rest in the shadow of the trees. Those supporting characters help in building the context, and the fact that every person portrayed here is wearing the traditional Sikh turban also informs that Lord Weeks was not unaware of the Golden Temple’s function and spiritual relevance.
