Marie Antoinette with a Rose, 1783 is an oil on canvas by Elisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun. The original artwork is part of The Palace of Versailles collection and was painted in 1783. The picture depicts the famous queen Marie Antoinette, one of the most popular figures from the French aristocracy, known for her infamous remarks at the end of French Absolutism. Vigée Le Brun was the Court painter of Antoinette, and as such is the artist that painted the largest number of pictures of the queen, even having a sort of friendship with her.
This artwork was painted in the same year of Vigée Le Brun's admission to the distinguished Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture. Le Brun was initially refused to enter the Academy, but because of her already established ties to the Queen, Louis XVI pressured the institution to accept her entrance. Earlier that year, Le Brun had painted Marie Antoinette in a Chemise Dress, submitted to the yearly Salon. That painting caused a shocking reaction to the aristocracy because they affirmed that the work was too sensual and improper for the queen. Le Brun was then commissioned for another portrait of Antoinette, making Marie Antoinette with a Rose.
The artwork is a luscious portrait that depicts Antoinette in a forest scenery. The figure looks directly at the audience. The queen is smiling, but her expression is still a sort of restricted one, keeping in line with the seriousness expected from the almost sacred figures of the aristocracy. She is wearing makeup, depicted with blushing pink cheeks. The woman also wears a big grey wig, which was common for the aristocrats of her time. The queen wears a soft blue dress that shines with light reflection in a palette extensively used by the Rococo artists. Her dress has many details, and the hat is adorned with big white feathers. Antoinette also wears a pearl necklace.
As the title indicates, the lady is holding a pink rose with a ribbon. Antoinette is depicted against a garden background. There is a big tree covered by black shadows to her left, which extends from the bottom left corner and has its branches extending on most of the top of the picture. While the tree strongly contrasts the figure, the composition allows a fluid reading from the figure to the background.
