Unframed rolled canvas orders will arrive rolled inside a protective tube with an extra 1.5" white canvas on all sides so you can easily frame it locally.

Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze's immense vision of George Washington, painted in 1851 by the German-born artist, is a fantastical imagined reproduction of a pivotal moment in the American Revolution when two and a half thousand troops crossed with the leader of the continental army to surprise the Hessian force with an attack on Christmas Day 1776. This strategical coup marked a significant moment in American military history and Leutze's romantic and indulgent historical reproduction of the event has become one of the most enduring images in popular patriotic iconography. The artist worked on the canvas for two years, during which time it was damaged in a studio fire. For the original the flames were to be its fate when, almost a century later, it was destroyed in a WWII bombing raid over Bremen where it was housed in the city's main gallery. Yet the second version, bought in 1851 when exhibited in New York, survived the war and is currently housed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. The subject first of engravings, then reproductions, then as a ubiquitous souvenir image, Leutze's Washington Crossing the Delaware is a stirring vision of the archetypal American drama.
At the age of 25, Leutze returned to his home country of Germany to study under Carl Friedrich Lessing at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. It was at this time that he worked extensively on Washington Crossing the Delaware, earnestly attempting to depict the scene with the utmost historical accuracy. While numerous contemporary sources identify countless errors in the rendering of the scene, each are contextual, not technical. Leutze's vision of this critical moment is seen through the telescope of individual experience, as certainly the growth of the United States as a world power captured the hearts and minds of Europe. Although his Delaware River is undoubtedly the River Rhine at Kaiserwerth, Washington Crossing the Delaware is American through and through; a testament to the melting-pot mentality of mid-nineteenth century America.
