Francesco Paolo Hayez' 1859 painting The Kiss is an iconic work of Italian Romanticism and has since been closely associated with the momentous years of the Risorgimento, or Italian unification, a period of cohesion and nation-building which reached its zenith during the Second Italian Independence War of 1859. Hayez carefully staged an imagined reproduction of two lovers locked in a passionate embrace and transformed it into an allegorical vision of the national resurgence that would finally lead to a unified Italy some two decades later. The colors of the loving couple commemorate the union between France and Italy and their victory over the opposing Austro-Hungarian forces during a decisive battle in 1859, as the artist invites the viewer to consider every last detail of this affectionate homage to unity. Full of joy but suffused with the agony of parting, Hayez' canvas hints at impending danger through the looming shadow and the dagger bulging against the woman's waist. Suspended between a number of historical possibilities, the two lovers are both potential victims and potential benefactors of fate.
As one of the most memorable reproductions of a kiss in the history of art, Hayez' triumph is a characteristic burst of emotion in the career of a truly unique classicist. Renowned for exploring themes from biblical or classical literature and imbuing therein a surge of emotional intensity, the artist left his own typically Italian mark on the genre of Romanticism. The movement, which stressed the expression of the individuality of deep human feelings over rational thought, often looked to the Middle Ages for sources of ceremony, courtly love, and intense personal drive. Hayez' work is therefore a masterful intermingling of past and present, the personal and the political.
