Animals in a Landscape is a stunning 110.2 × 99.7 cm (43 3/8 × 39 1/4 inc.) oil painting by the German artist Franz Marc and belongs to the Detroit Institute of Art. Franz Marc is deeply associated with the developments of German Expressionism. He is known for his knowledge and interest in animal anatomy, constantly depicting different animals in varied ways, his work verging on abstraction in his late canvases. Marc was also keenly interested in color theory and developed a particular and impactful color palette, having an immediate impact on the viewer. Animals in a Landscape is an impressive example of his 1910s works, with its geometric formalizations and intense colors.
Animals in a Landscape is a beautiful example of Marc’s late works. His palette is restricted to the primary colors with the addition of green, a constant trait of these more experimental works. It’s hard to distinguish the figure from the background, and taking his cues from the Cubists, Marc transformed his figures into rectangular or square shapes, being divided by a clear black outline. The aesthetic impact is a vertiginous one, creating a strong sense of movement and using vibrant colors. The figure and background constantly merge and separate from each other. The picture’s composition is a chaotic and innovative one, keeping with the spirit of his time.
Franz Marc was born in 1880, the son of a landscape painter. Having his first contact with art in the Academy of Arts in Munich, he visited Paris briefly and was strongly impacted by the work of the Post-Impressionists. Coming back to Germany, the young Franz decided to drop his academic education, not identifying with the rigid institutional conventions. Marc was always interested in working with animals as subjects, and for many years he gave classes on the anatomy of animals. From the 1900s onwards, his work began to gain new vitality and formal experimentation.
Around 1910, Marc met Wassily Kandinsky, who was also a vital figure for this time. Together, they broke with the established group of independent artists exploring a deformed manner of figuration. Marc and Kandinsky were then interested in color theory, its spiritual meanings, and the exploration of abstraction. In the late canvases of Marc, we get a clear example of this formalization and use of geometrical shapes.
