Cats is a captivating 61 x 50.5 cm oil painting by the artist Franz Marc, who became known in the early 20th century for his stellar work, representing a more abstract take on German Expressionism. Throughout his whole life, the artist was very interested in animals. Since his early and more realistic years, Marc was constantly depicting animals. He made his income out of animal anatomy classes, lecturing students and upcoming artists through a significant amount of years. Cats is a tender picture that shows two felines lying together, resting.
This heartwarming painting already embodies Marc's later palette, using mainly the primaries, along with black, white, and green. Here, the painter's manner is a step away from his most famous works. In an almost graphic manner, the brushwork is very gestural and very reminiscent of Van Gogh's work.
The ground was painted in light brown, and there is warm green grass on both sides of the image. The cat closest to the forefront was painted white and blue, with black for his contours. The other one is almost centered on the composition and has its face turned to the viewer, painted with orange, contrasting to the blue close to it. They are both lying on a red piece of fabric. The image evokes tenderness in the viewer, and even with a more gestural style, Marc seems to capture the cat's main traits and essence truthfully.
Marc entered Munich's Royal Academy, where he was taught by some of the most praised artists from his time. His choice in career was possibly inspired by his father, who was a landscape painter. The artist had to interrupt his studies and serve in the military, and after that, he went to Paris in 1907. There, Marc had a significant experience with impactful pieces of Modern art: he saw the works of the Post-Impressionists and was thoroughly fascinated by them.
The German artist became an autodidact, and in the upcoming years, his work took many different changes. His later work became his most beloved output. In 1910, he met Wassily Kandinsky, and together they decided to work in a more abstract vein, sharing their perceptions on color, painting, and spirituality. Even though his abstraction grew, Marc never abandoned the figurative depiction of animals, a vital characteristic of his work. By 1910, they tended to gain a heavy stylization.
